Timothy Ruppert - Our nation's cause is liberty - published in the Times-Picayune October 18, 2001

Excited about the public outpouring of religious behavior in recent weeks, David Frantz concludes, "This nation has solidified under one cause" ("Maybe there's a silver lining," Oct. 15).

Indeed it has. But the writer is confused about why.

The "cause" for which we have united is not the public declaration of belief in a god or the transformation of our noble democracy into a narrow theocracy.

We are united in the fight for liberty.

It would be wise for us to remember that it is our enemy who claims divine guidance and supernatural justification.

Fortunately, the United States is a nation that treasures freedom of, and from, religion, as guaranteed by our godless Constitution.
