Harry Greenberger's letter to the Times-Picayune, "Keep our society's wall strong" - Published January 8, 2002.

The Suburban Report by Amy Blakely intelligently and courageously criticized the events at the St. Bernard Parish School Board regarding efforts to bring religion into the public schools.

How appropriate that the column appeared on the 200th anniversary of the famous letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, confirming that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was intended to build a "wall of separation between church and state."

Her column also was published in the month of January, which, by proclamation of the mayor of New Orleans, has been designated as "Celebrate State/Church Separation Month," during which the mayor has urged "all citizens to participate . . . by reading the U.S. Constitution and discovering for themselves its unifying historic, legal and secular values."

The School Board in St. Bernard (and most others in the state of Louisiana) are well advised to follow that same suggestion.
