Harry Greenberger's letter to Newsweek
about the article entitled "Religion and the Brain."
5/4/01
What exciting progress is being
made by scientists in learning who
and what we humans are, as exemplified in your report "Religion
and
the Brain!" And what ignorance is shown by your journalist
who wrote the article and another whose "Faith is more than
a feeling" commentary following it!
Sharon Begley editorializing at
the end of the report writes: "...whether our brain wiring
creates God, or whether God created our brain wiring. Which you
believe is, in the end, a matter of faith." Kenneth Woodward
says: "...these emotions have nothing to do with how well we
communicate with God," and "To suggest that the brain
is the only source of our experiences...ignoring...important factors...not
to mention the operation of divine grace." Talking back and
forth with the supernatural? What in the world is "divine grace?"
Just a minute! What's faith got
to do with science? Faith, by definition, is unquestioning belief,
while science is the process of questioning everything in a search
for truth.
Good report! Wrong reporters!
Harry Greenberger, President of
New Orleans Secular Humanist Assn.
